Set Spotlight: Beckett Media 2017 NSCC Promotional Sets
This year at the 2017 National Sports Collectors Convention, collectors had the opportunity to participate in the Beckett Media Scavenger hunt. This contest consisted of piecing together ten special Beckett Magazine cover cards, and then presenting the complete set for four limited bonus metal cards.
The cover cards were only available at specific hobby dealers scattered across the landscape of the convention. Finding all ten of the cards was a bit of challenge, but once assembled, the result was a very cool piece of National Convention memorabilia.
Most of the cover cards are serial numbered to 1000. The Ben Simmons cover card was the most common at 1500 copies, while the rarest cover card was the Michael Jordan cover at 300 copies. Below is the complete checklist, the vendor/distributor of the card, and the stated print run of the card.

The bonus set consists of four metal cards that depict an artist rendition of a former Beckett cover. These cards were given out in blue velvet bags. Each bag had three of the four base cards in the set, with the fourth card being an autographed version. The print runs on these cards are a bit confusing, because each card has a sticker that says only 400 sets were produced. The confusing part is that the auto cards have the same sticker and state the same print run. Although it hasn’t been confirmed, most collectors at the National believe that the total print run (base and auto) is 400 sets. The breakdown being 300 base sets and 100 auto sets. Here is the checklist for the metal cards, both base and auto:
Beckett Baseball Stan Musial
Beckett Basketball Denis Rodman
Beckett Football Dan Hampton
Beckett Hockey Bobby Hull

The autographed versions all use sticker autos. This explains how Beckett was able to include Stan Musial autos. On an side note, it is clear that the Musial autos were signed later in his life; they are very shaky. Additionally, there are color variations in the ink. Some of the Musial autos are found in black ink while others are in blue. To my knowledge, neither is considered a short print.
